Anti-Christian America

January 3, 2005

"Your papers, please" has long been shorthand for the intrusion of the state into private affairs, as historically was most notoriously exemplified by the National Socialists of Germany from 1933 to 1944. Now, in the name of "fighting terrorism," the Republican Congress has, in one fell swoop, managed to eradicate some of the last vestiges of constitutional federalism and exceed the wildest dreams of the most ambitious totalitarian.

In the new Intelligence Reform Bill, S. 2845, SEC. 3064 ESTABLISHMENT OF ELECTRONIC BIRTH AND DEATH REGISTRATION SYSTEMS states the following:

In consultation with the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Commissioner of Social Security, the Secretary shall take the following actions:

  1. Work with the States to establish a common data set and common data exchange protocol for electronic birth registration systems and death registration systems.

  2. Coordinate requirements for such systems to align with a national model.

  3. Ensure that fraud prevention is built into the design of electronic vital registration systems in the collection of vital event data, the issuance of birth certificates, and the exchange of data among government agencies.

  4. Ensure that electronic systems for issuing birth certificates, in the form of printed abstracts of birth records or digitized images, employ a common format of the certified copy, so that those requiring such documents can quickly confirm their validity.

  5. Establish uniform field requirements for State birth registries.

The significance of this small section tucked away within the bill is that it finally completes Social Security's transformation from a pension plan (however fraudulent a Ponzi-scheme) into a de facto national ID program. No longer will Christians who object to the number of the federal beast on religious grounds be able to refuse to have their children assigned a number - it will be interesting to see if the silence that has greeted the passage of this law will be matched by the shouts of outrage once these numbers are to be forcibly implanted, as is foreshadowed by (3)'s requirement to ensure fraud prevention.

It also spells an end to the pretense that America is the most-free nation in the world. In fact, it isn't even close. In most European and Asian countries, one can freely withdraw cash from a bank without a federal report being filed, purchase cars and other expensive material goods with legal tender without coming under suspicion of being a criminal, buy a cell phone without ID and have a child without having an identification number electronically tattooed upon it for life.

Sadly, this is not a development that surprises me in the least. In fact, in my very first political column on WorldNetDaily, published on Sept. 14, 2001, and titled, "Yield No More Freedom," I wrote:

It is said that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance, but that vigilance must be applied within as well as without. A thousand suicide bombers could not destroy America, but America is quite capable of destroying itself in the pursuit of any number of false idols, among them wrongheaded and illusory notions of security at any price. Individual privacy, like private property, is one of the foundations of our freedom, and it must not be thrown away out of fear.

Well, we yielded more nevertheless, thanks to our Republican administration, House and Senate. It is clear that the American people have been betrayed with this so-called reform bill by again having their liberties sacrificed on the altar of homeland security. It stuns me that so many supposed champions of freedom support these abominable actions - I can't even imagine the howls of outrage were it President Hillary Clinton leading the charge for such a step toward 1984-style government.

George Bush may not be Hitler, as the Move-On buffoons insisted, but he is building a monstrous edifice that the late and unlamented National Socialist might well have envied. In a Christmas season where we have just seen an increase in the number of government attacks on Christianity, one does not have to be a paranoid "Left Behind" fan to see where this government appears to be headed.
